A manual osteopath in British Columbia was asked by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) not to use the title of manual osteopath as it contains the word “osteopath” and that word is a protected title in BC.
To prevent a conflict with CPSBC we request all members of College of Registered Manual Osteopaths (Canada) in British Columbia use ROMP instead of RMO (registered manual osteopath) as their title. ROMP stands for Registered Osteopathic Manual Practitioner. This applies only to BC and our members in other provinces should continue using RMO.
Of course this may be just one instance against one manual osteopath but we wish to remain in good terms with all regulatory colleges in Canada and if they have an issue with using a protected word, it is best not to use it.
This is not mandatory. CRMO members in British Columbia can continue to use RMO if they wish to do so. Until we receive official notice from CPSBC this remains the optional choice of CRMO members in BC. CPSBC has not yet contacted CRMO in this regard.
We have copyrighted the title of Registered Osteopathic Manual Practitioner (ROMP) in Canada.
